2022 Audi Q4 e-tron
Starting at
$45,000 est
Overview
Audi has big aspirations in the luxury
electric-vehicle space, and the 2022 Q4 e-tron and Q4 e-tron
Sportback SUVs will double the size of the company's
EV-centric e-tron lineup. Smaller than the mid-size
e-tron SUV, the Q4 siblings sit on a footprint similar to the
compact gasoline-powered
Q5 crossover. While the base powertrain is a single 201-hp
electric motor and a 77.0-kWh battery pack, a more powerful 295-hp dual-motor
setup with all-wheel drive is optional. The battery pack is said to deliver up
to 250 miles of driving range per charge. The Q4 e-tron models will go up
against other compact electric SUVs such as the Tesla Model Y and
the Volvo XC40
Recharge when they go on sale. Expect to see the Q4 e-tron
at Audi dealerships by the end of 2021.
What's New for 2022?
The Q4 e-tron and Q4 e-tron Sportback
are all-new models for 2022. They join the larger e-tron SUVs and the racy
e-tron GT sedan in Audi's fast-growing electric-vehicle
lineup.
The Q4 e-tron’s 77.0-kWh battery pack is said to provide up to 250
miles per charge. The Q4 e-tron supports charging up to 125-kW and, according
to Audi, the state-of-charge can hit 80 percent in about 30 minutes.
2022 Ford F-150 Lightning.
Starting
at
$42,000 est
Ford hasn't kept the upcoming F-150
Lightning a secret, evidenced by the company's million-pound towing
stunt from 2019. The Lightning shares much of the
regular F-150's body and cabin but swaps that truck's gasoline-powered V-6 and
V-8 engine options for a pair of electric motors and one of two different
battery packs. The Standard-Range battery is said to deliver up to 230 miles
per charge and the Extended-Range juice pack is aiming for 300 miles. But by
the time the 2022 F-150 Lightning reaches the market, it won't be the only
all-electric pickup truck. GMC's Hummer EV SUT is
close to its launch, and a rival truck from upstart Rivian may
also beat Ford to the punch. Neither of those trucks, however, have the
strength of the F-150 name behind
them, and the electric version of America's
favorite truck will surely be an impressive piece when it
goes on sale sometime in spring 2022.
While it uses a name from
Ford's performance past, the F-150 Lightning is an all-new model
for the Ford truck lineup for the 2022 model year. All-wheel drive is standard
and the EV pickup is capable of towing up to 10,000 pounds.
With the smaller of the two battery packs, Ford claims a driving
range of 230 miles per charge; upgrading to the larger pack boosts driving
range to 300 miles. Buyers will be able to charge their F-150 Lightnings at
home via 110- and 220-volt outlets but the truck is also capable of juicing at
public DC fast-charging stations, and Ford says it can charge from 15 percent
to 80 percent of battery capacity in 44 minutes. Ford also engineered the F-150
Lightning to serve as a backup
generator and says a fully-charged truck can supply up to
three days of electricity for the average household in the event of a power
outage.

2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup
Starting
at
$79,995
Overview
In an amazing twist of
fate, General Motors' gas-guzzling Hummer brand, discontinued in 2010, is poised to make a
comeback for 2022 as an all-electric sub-brand of GMC. The resurrected Hummer will appear first as a pickup
truck and later as an SUV. The
new pickup is shaping up to be quite the beast, with up to 1000 horsepower from
its top powertrain option, which uses three electric motors, offers an
estimated range of 350 miles per charge, and a leaps to 60 mph in a claimed 3.0
seconds. The Hummer EV also features removable roof panels, an optional
adjustable air suspension, and a cool four-wheel steering feature that allows
it to "crab" sideways—drive diagonally—all of which should make it fun
to take off-road. Pickup trucks are the next frontier for electric vehicles, as
potential rivals from upstarts Rivian, Bollinger, and Tesla—as well as established automakers such as Ford—are preparing their own entries in this emerging
segment. The Hummer EV appeared alongside comedians Awkwafina, Kenan Thompson,
and Will Ferrell in a Super Bowl commercial in
February 2021.

What's New for 2022?
While Hummer is an old
name, the Hummer EV will be an all-new model within the GMC lineup. The Hummer
EV will go on sale in fall, 2021, and at first only the most expensive Edition
1 model will be available; less expensive trims will come into the picture
starting in 2022.
The Hummer EV uses GM's new Ultium battery-pack technology and
boasts an estimated 350 miles of driving range per charge. The company also
said that the Hummer will have an 800-volt electrical architecture with
350-kilowatt fast-charging capability which allows it to add 100 miles of range
in just 10 minutes. For buyers who don't have any DC fast charging stations
nearby, the Hummer EV will also be able to charge on regular public charging
terminals or at home via a provided adapter, but charging times are
significantly slower.
